Mental Health- Catastrophizing

What is Catastrophizing anyway?

  • Catastrophizing is:
    • Negative prediction of future events
    • Imagining the worst situation
  • Catastrophizing invites anxiety and depression
Changing how we think takes work.

Fear as a motivation works briefly, but in the long run it makes us depressed, anxious, and less functional.

How to stop catastrophizing?

  • Start with a good rest/sleep
  • Learn to accept uncertainty
    • Believe “I can do hard things!”
    • mindfulness meditation
  • Motivate yourself by what you want in life; set positive goals
  1. Start by noticing when you are catastrophizing
  2. Pause
  3. Challenge those thoughts
  4. Replace those thoughts with something more honest and more helpful
